In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hiddleston, one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s longest-standing performers, hinted at bidding farewell to his iconic role as Loki. Since his debut as the mischievous villain in 2011’s Thor, Hiddleston has become synonymous with the character, second only to Samuel L. Jackson in longevity within the MCU.
After 14 years of character development across multiple movies and his own TV show, Hiddleston shared insights on the Loki finale. While avoiding spoilers, he explained how the conclusion serves as a bookend to his character’s journey and why now might be the opportune moment for him to step away from Marvel.
Reflecting on the finale, Hiddleston noted, “It’s the conclusion to Seasons 1 and 2, and it’s also the conclusion to six films and 12 episodes and 14 years of my life.” At 42, he acknowledged the transformative journey from being cast at 29, expressing that the finale encapsulates echoes and resonances of every version of Loki he has portrayed.
Delving into the thematic depth of the finale, Hiddleston touched upon the concept of free will, personal choices, and the pursuit of purpose. He remarked, “I think we all wonder if we’re in charge of our own story… every choice you make adds up to the picture of your life. And do those choices inform your purpose?
And I think all of us, as people, want happy lives but we also want lives with a purpose. And that’s really what the show is talking about.” As Loki’s journey seemingly reaches its conclusion, Hiddleston’s reflections hint at the emotional depth and significance of this farewell to Marvel’s beloved character.
